PUBLIC NOTICE – Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) Awareness – Western Australia
Authorities in Western Australia are reminding the community to stay alert and follow biosecurity guidance following monitoring and detections of avian influenza (bird flu) in wildlife and poultry in parts of Australia.
Avian influenza is a viral disease that can spread among birds and, in rare cases, to humans through close or unprotected contact with infected birds.
The situation is being monitored by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (Western Australia) in coordination with animal and public health authorities.
What the community needs to do:
- Do not touch sick or dead birds
- Avoid handling wild birds or poultry showing signs of illness or found dead.
- Keep children and pets away from them.
- Record & Report sightings
- Take a photo from a safe distance, note location and number of birds.
- Report the sick or dead birds or unusual poultry deaths to 1800 675 888. (Sick birds typically have difficulty walking and holding their head up and may have discharge from the nose or eyes)
- Practice good hygiene
- Wash hands thoroughly after any outdoor activity, especially near parks, farms, wetlands, or bird habitats.
- Do not bring contaminated footwear or equipment into homes or poultry areas.
- Protect backyard poultry
- Keep chickens and other birds in secure enclosures to reduce contact with wild birds.
- Ensure food and water sources are covered and not accessible to wildlife.
- Food safety reminder
- Properly cooked poultry and eggs remain safe to eat.
- Always follow standard food handling and cooking hygiene.
Stay informed through official updates and follow all biosecurity directions to help protect wildlife, pets, and the community.
